Solidarity with Kenya: the YDC Condemns Violence Against Young People – Statement

The undersigned members of the Youth Democracy Cohort (YDC) stand in solidarity with the youth of Kenya amidst the ongoing protests triggered by the Finance Bill 2024. The people of Kenya are exercising their democratic rights as outlined in Article 37 of the Constitution of Kenya, which states, “Every person has the right, peaceably and unarmed, to assemble, to demonstrate, to picket, and to present petitions to public authorities.” As part of a global platform dedicated to advancing youth political and civic engagement, we recognise the significance of these protests in demanding accountability, transparency, and inclusive governance from Kenya’s leadership.

The protests underscore a pivotal moment in Kenya’s democratic journey, where young people, particularly Generation Z, exercise their democratic rights to voice concerns about economic policies that directly affect their futures. This statement acknowledges the legitimate grievances raised by the protesters regarding the potential socio-economic implications of the Finance Bill 2024, including its effects on youth employment and economic equity.

The YDC Position:

  • Support for citizens’ right to peaceful protest as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya.
  • The withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024, resignation of the Inspector General, and dismissal of certain cabinet secretaries are steps towards accountability but are not enough.
  • Acknowledgment of Generation Z’s unique stance: leaderless, partyless, demanding immediate actions rather than dialogue.
  • Restore the conditions so that citizens, especially young people, can continue their peaceful protests.
  • Cease police brutality and appoint a full investigation to restore citizens’ trust in the country’s institutions..
  • Call for the government to listen to  grievances and engage in meaningful solutions, focusing on economic equity, youth unemployment, and societal well-being.

The undersigned YDC members firmly support the right to peaceful protest, a cornerstone of democratic participation in Kenya. We commend recent steps towards accountability, such as the withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024 and the dismissal of certain Cabinet Secretaries for it marks important strides towards accountability. However, the vetting process for new appointees must emphasise credibility and integrity. We call for accountability from various departments for the tragic events involving young Kenyans, highlighting the importance of addressing critical issues like corruption, public debt auditing, and incompetence within the government. Generation Z’s leaderless and partyless stance highlights their demand for immediate, concrete actions rather than traditional political dialogue. We urge the government to listen earnestly and implement policies that address the urgent needs of young people, particularly in economic equity and youth unemployment. Collaborative efforts are essential to foster a more inclusive and prosperous Kenya, ensuring sustainable development and inclusive growth.

The YDC Commitment:

The undersigned members of the YDC remain steadfast in our commitment to promoting youth-led initiatives that drive positive change in governance and policy-making. Through the YDC as an inclusive platform, which comprises leading organisations and entities from around the globe, we can leverage resources, expertise, and research to empower young people to actively participate in shaping their societies. Through the YDC, we will continue to provide platforms for dialogue, advocacy, and civic engagement, ensuring that young people are not only heard but also actively involved in shaping the future of Kenya.

We remain committed to empowering young people to take on active leadership roles in their communities and national public authorities. We believe in the transformative power of youth leadership. It is imperative to integrate young voices not only in protests but also in decision-making processes. Youth participation is vital for crafting policies that reflect the diversity, innovation, and future aspirations of Kenya.

In these challenging times, let us unite in solidarity and resilience. Together, we can build a Kenya where every young person has the opportunity to thrive, contribute meaningfully to society, and participate fully in the democratic process.
