The WYDE Civic Engagement project complements its activities at global and regional levels with ad-hoc country-level support. The overall aim of the Quick-Impact Actions (QIAS) is to provide urgent and strategic support to local actors working on youth political inclusion and participation, always upon request of the relevant EU Delegation.
Based on the specific objectives determined in close cooperation with EUDs, the most appropriate local actor(s) are identified and selected to implement the QIAs. This is done either through a direct technical intervention or an action grant, awarded directly or through a restrictive call for proposals, depending on the urgency of the need, the political calendar, and the potential to generate positive changes in youth participation.)
Project Overview
The Bojaki Project is a youth-led initiative designed to combat youth voter apathy in Lesotho by facilitating voter registration and civic engagement among young people aged 18–35, particularly in remote and underserved regions. The project addresses challenges posed by the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) recent requirement for voter re-registration using National ID cards. Young people in remote areas face significant barriers, including limited access to ID services, geographic constraints, and misinformation about the voter registration process. The project will create an informed, motivated generation of voters who see the value of electoral participation in shaping governance and community development.
Key Objectives:
- Mobilising Voter Registration: Engage 10,000 youth across five districts (Maseru, Leribe, Berea, Botha-Bothe, and Mokhotlong) by 2025 through direct outreach and peer-led activities.
- Raising Awareness: Use social media and community events to increase demand for first-time voter registration and combat misconceptions about electoral participation.
Proposal merging objectives and approach
- Mobilising Voter Registration: Collaborate with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the civil registry to bring voter registration and ID services directly to communities, by organising sports tournaments, entertainment events, and civic education workshops to engage 10,000 youth across five districts (Maseru, Leribe, Berea, Botha-Bothe, and Mokhotlong).
- Raising Awareness: Use social media and community events, engaging with youth in familiar informal settings and leveraging peer-led outreach, to increase demand for first-time voter registration and combat misconceptions about electoral participation.
Target Groups:
- Young, first-time voters (18–35): Particularly those disengaged from civic processes.
- Youth in remote or underserved areas: Focused on overcoming geographic and logistical barriers.
- Youth with socio-political or religious concerns: Offering culturally sensitive education to address personal and ideological reservations.
